FRANCES C. FAYE
AFTRA membership application signed by singer Frances Faye in 1954
Document signed "Frances C. Faye" in blue ink. Blue ink notations in unknown hand. 2 pages, 6¼x9, 1 sheet, front and verso. June 4, 1954. Membership form for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Sassy, saucy and openly gay, American singer and songwriter Faye (1912-1991) influenced nightclub singers like Lena Horne, Eartha Kitt and Bette Midler with her double entendres, her powerful singing and her smoky performances. (Despite this, she wasn't the most glamorous of women; she's been quoted as describing herself this way: "I'm not pretty but I'm neat. Meticulous. You could eat off me") She got her professional start as a pianist, accompanying singers in nightclubs and on vaudeville and Broadway. Her singing career started in the 1930s, and she continued headlining into the 1970s and performing into the 1980s, singing bubbly pop along with more obscure songs that made her a darling of jazz aficionados. Faye also wrote her own material and had two hits in 1936: No Regrets and Well, All Right, the second a hit when covered by the Andrews Sisters. She appeared in a total of two movies: the 1937 Bing Crosby vehicle Double or Nothing and, more appropriately, as a sharp-tongued, opium-puffing madam in 1978 Pretty Baby, her only starring role. Lightly toned and creased. Light nicks in left and right edges. Paper clip impression in top edge. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
