First woman to serve in a U.S. President's Cabinet.
Autograph note, unsigned, 2 p, 4x5½. On note paper of Department of Labor. No place, no date. To Mr. Lubin (?) & Miss Lo D (?). In full: "Will you select some names of available & competent people to do this. Suggest use J. Watt & De. Lewis as [illegible]." Frances Perkins (1880-1965) was the first woman Cabinet member. She was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's only Secretary of Labor serving from March 4, 1933 to May 1945, when she retired from President Truman's Cabinet. While in FDR's Cabinet, she was Chairman of the President's Committee on Economic Security. This committee's report formed the basis for the Social Security Act passed in 1935. In 1946, President Truman appointed her to the U.S. Civil Service Commission, where she served until Truman left office in 1953. Lightly creased. ¼-inch stain on bottom edge of each page. Otherwise, fine condition.
