She signed this index card in Taos in 1955.
Signature: "Frances Crane/Taos 2-19-55", 5x3 index card. Frances
Crane (1890-1981) was living comfortably as an expatriate American in Europe,
writing humorous essays for the New Yorker and other publications, when she ran
afoul of the Nazi regime in Germany. Expelled from that country, she moved
to Taos, New Mexico and, already in her fifties began a second career as a
mystery novelist. Beginning with The Turquoise Shop in 1941, she wrote
more than two dozen mystery novels featuring husband and wife private
investigators Pat and Jean Abbott, most set in a fictional community closely
resembling Taos. (She retired the Abbotts in the early 1960s, but wrote five
more novels with different characters. The Abbotts were featured on two radio
series, 1945-1947 and 1954-1955. Lightly worn at edges and corners. Pencil notes
(unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Overall, fine
condition.
