FRANCES BAVIER and ROBERT MIDDLETON
Signatures of two veteran character actors
Inscribed Signature: "To Irene/With Best/Wishes/Frances Bavier/Andy Griffith", 5½x4. B/w magazine photo affixed in lower right. Also signed on verso: "Robert Middleton". B/w magazine photo affixed in lower left. FRANCES BAVIER (1902-1989) had a successful career on Broadway before making her feature film debut in 1951 (The Day the Earth Stood Still). She continued to appear in films until 1974 (Benji), but she is best known for her television work, appearing on several TV series, including anthologies, dramas, Westerns and sit-coms. On The Andy Griffith Show, she played Aunt Bea Taylor, who lived in to help care for Andy's six-year-old son, Opie (played by actor and future Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard). Burly ROBERT MIDDLETON (1911-1977) played villainous roles in countless Westerns. He appeared prominently in such films as Friendly Persuasion (1956), Day of the Bad Man (1958) and Cattle Baron (1963). He played the boss of Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) on several episodes of The Honeymooners. Trained in music and with a booming voice, Middleton was a radio actor and announcer before moving on to film and television. Pencil note (unknown hand) in upper right of Middleton side. Creased at upper right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
