FRANCES PARKINSON KEYES
Letter from the author to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt saying that she will send a carbon copy of all the pages she collected on the Roosevelt family for her planned article in Harpers' Bazaar, saying she will not radically alter anything unless her or the President wishes her to do so
Typed letter signed: "Frances Parkinson Keyes", in black ink, 8½x11. September 16, 1936. In part: "Dear Mrs. Roosevelt: In order to save time, I am sending you the carbon of the pages relating to the Roosevelt family as I originally drafted the material for Harpers'. This material will all be amplified, and the latter part of it will be brought up to date. But it is not my desire or intention to make any radical changes in it for magazine publication, unless you or the President wish me to do so". American author Frances Parkinson Keyes (1885-1970), born in Charlottesville, Virginia, was a prolific writer who wrote a great number of books - including novels, memoirs and biographies - between 1919 and 1972. A convert to Catholicism, Keyes was especially noted for her use of Catholic themes in her writing. (Interestingly, Keyes' biggest seller was the 1948 murder mystery Dinner at Antoine's, but she wrote a total of two mystery novels during her career) She married Senator Henry W. Keyes when she was 18 and he was 40. Out of her experiences in Washington, D. C., she produced three nonfiction books (including Letters from a Senator's Wife, a collection of articles she wrote under that title for Good Housekeeping) and a novel, All That Glitters. Toned, esp. heavy on outer margins. Corners lightly worn and creased. Paper clip stain on top margin. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
