FRANCES PARKINSON KEYES
The American novelist discusses a newspaper review in typed letter, signs name in blue ink
Typed letter signed: "James Parkinson Keyes" in blue ink. 1 page, 8½x11. Written on personal letterhead. The Oxbow, Newbury, Vermont. December 17, 1962. Addressed to Mrs. Leslie J. Stanford of Jamestown, New York. In full: "Thank you for your letter of December 12th, which I hasten to answer. Though I am very glad to do so, I am sorry, in a way, that you did not write direct to Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, as this would have saved a little time. Of course a town of 50,000, with a daily newspaper is entitled to a review copy of a book. I am sending a copy of your letter, together with a copy of my reply, to the president of Farrar, Straus & Cudahy and hope very much that you will have quick action. With kind regards, I am, Very sincerely yours". American author Frances Parkinson Keyes (1885-1970), born in Charlottesville, Virginia, was a prolific writer who wrote a great number of books - including novels, memoirs and biographies - between 1919 and 1972. A convert to Catholicism, Keyes was especially noted for her use of Catholic themes in her writing. (Interestingly, Keyes' biggest seller was the 1948 murder mystery Dinner at Antoine's, but she wrote a total of two mystery novels during her career) She married Senator Henry W. Keyes when she was 18 and he was 40. Out of her experiences in Washington, D. C., she produced three nonfiction books (including Letters from a Senator's Wife, a collection of articles she wrote under that title for Good Housekeeping) and a novel, All That Glitters. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Creased throughout. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
