Christmas card.
Typed letter signed "Frances P. Bolton". 1 page, 5¼x8, on
Bolton's personalized House of Representatives stationery. Jan. 16, 1945. In
full: "My Dear Friends: It has been very heartwarming to come back into
session to find your thought of me expressed in the charming Christmas card. Do
know that I appreciate it more than I can say. May I take this opportunity
of hoping for you in the New Year the courage and the deep certainty of an inner
peace which alone will assure you a Joyous New Year. With renewed appreciation
of your Christmas message, I am, Faithfully yours,". Bolton (1885-1977)
was Republican U. S. Representative from Ohio's 22nd Congressional
District (1940-1696). Active in public health, she persuaded Secretary of
War Newton D. Baker to establish an nursing school during World War I so that
American troops wouldn't have to rely on untrained nurses. This nursing
school, established at the Western Reserve University in 1923, was renamed the
Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing in 1935. Bolton was a long-time
member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and, in 1955, became the first
American woman to lead an international delegation, to the Middle East.
Her husband Chester Castle Bolton was also elected to the House of
Representatives (1929-1937), as was her son, Oliver Payne Bolton
(1953-1957 and 1963-1965). Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Folded in half
and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
