FRANCIS B. OGDEN
As US Consul in Liverpool (1835), he signs a legal paper concerning a shipment of goods from Philadelphia.
Partly Printed Document signed in ink: "Francis B. Ogden", 1 page, 6½x7¾. Liverpool, England, 1835 October 5. Also signed "Laine Pearce". On a US government form for verifying oaths by owners of goods, Ogden attests, in full: "I, Francis B. Ogden, Consul of the United States of America, for the Port of Liverpool and its dependencies, do certify and make known to whom these presents shall come, that Septimus Booker, before whom the annexed affidavit of Richard Glover hath been made, is a Master Extraordinary in Chancery, duly authorized to administer Oaths and Affirmations; that the deponent is worthy of credit, qualified to verify the annexed Invoice; and that the said Affidavit was administered in the presence of Laine Pearce, who is duly authorized to attest the same." US eagle vignette above this statement. Seal affixed in lower left corner with narrow blue ribbon passing through all sheets, tip showing at right edge of seal. One inch tear 1" down from top left corner. Vertical and horizontal folds with slight separations beginning at horizontals. Soiled and toned. Accompanied by: 1) Affidavit, 2 pages, 8x10 (1 front, 1 front and verso) of signer "Richard Glover", also dated 1835 October 5, stating that his employer, Dicken and Glover, are the owners of the goods itemized on the attached invoice. Also signed "S Booker" as Master Extraordinary in Chancery [a court official] and witnessed "L Pearce". 2) Handwritten invoice for 83 boxes of superfine flour mustard, valued at £168.8.9, signed "Richard Glover" on the same date. Integral address leaf to consignee, Alexander W. McKee & Co. of Philadelphia. Red wax seal affixed on bottom center. Soiled and toned. Tears at horizontal folds (1½ inch from left edge and ¼ inch from right edge) first sheet. Wear holes at horizontal folds and edges of second sheet. Creases, heavily soiled. Hole above address matching seal. Slim blue ribbon binding at lower left. FRANCIS B. OGDEN (1783-1857), a veteran of the War of 1812, was, successively, US Consul in three British ports: Liverpool (1829-1840), Bristol (1840-1852) and Manchester (1952-1857). He died in England and was buried there. SEPTIMUS BOOKER was a British Chancery Court official, also listed in 1841 as owner of the merchant vessel Standard. RICHARD GLOVER and LAINE PEARCE were English businessmen about whom no further information is readily available. Three items.
