Typed letter signed: "B.Y.", 1p, 8x10. December 9, 1929. On company letterhead to H.S. Moore, Esq. In full: "We are very sorry to have to inform you that the Williamson title in the Wolburn Books Series has been so very heavily oversubscribed and our allocation of copies so drastically cut down that we find ourselves unable to supply you with a copy. Your very truly". Francis Brett Young (1884-1954) was an English novelist, famous for his epic poem The Island (1944) which sold out of its first edition of 23,500 copies immediately upon print. Other famous works include the Mercian Novels --featuring The Black Diamond (1921), The House Under the Water (1932), and Cold Harbour (1924) --which follows themes based on life in the English West Midlands and Welsh Borders. Also a composer and playwright, Young's best work has been adapted to film and in television, including My Brother Jonathan (1948) starring Michael Denison and Dulcie Gray. His novel Portrait of Clare (1927, also a Mercian Novel) won the 1927 James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Multiple mailing folds. Creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
