He signs a Christmas card with a printed indulgence prayer printed on verso.
Christmas Card signed: "F. Cardinal Spellman", 3x4¼ overall, image 2¼x4 incased in plastic 3½x5½. Signed on front, which contains an image of the Christ. Printed on verso is a lengthy prayer, accompanied by printed text declaring "two hundred days of indulgence granted for each saying of this prayer. Although this card was issued for Christmas 1943, the Archbishop must have signed it years later, since he was not made a Cardinal until 1946. Francis Joseph Spellman (1889-1967) was ordained as a priest in 1916. He was the first American bishop to be consecrated in St. Peter's. He served as attaché to the Secretary of State of the Roman Curia and as editor of the Boston Pilot before becoming Archbishop of New York (1939-1967). Concurrently, he served in World War II as Apostolic Vicar for the US Armed Forces, interceding to help Rome to be spared Allied bombing. He was made a Cardinal in 1946. Spellman was an ardent anticommunist. Fine condition.
