FRANCIS CARDINAL SPELLMAN
He signs a typed 1962 letter, helping to arrange an audience with the Pope.
Typed Letter signed: "F. Cardinal Spellman" as Archbishop of New York. 1 page, 8x10½. Cardinal's Residence, New York City, 1962 August 17. On his personal letterhead to Mr. J. Russhon, New York, N.Y. In full: "I have your note and am pleased to enclose herewith a letter of presentation to Archbishop O'Connor, Rector of the North American College, who will arrange, if possible, for Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin to be received in audience by His Holiness during their stay in the Eternal City. With kind regards, I am, Very sincerely yours". Francis Joseph Spellman (1889-1967) was ordained as a priest in 1916. He was the first American bishop to be consecrated in St. Peter's. He served as attaché to the Secretary of State of the Roman Curia and as editor of the Boston Pilot before becoming Archbishop of New York (1939-1967). Concurrently, he served in World War II as Apostolic Vicar for the US Armed Forces, interceding to help Rome to be spared Allied bombing. He was made a Cardinal in 1946. Spellman was an outspoken anticommunist. Cardinal Spellman's help in arranging an audience with Pope John XXIII is somewhat ironic, since Spellman was - privately - a very severe critic of that Pope. One month after Spellman wrote this letter, the Pope was diagnosed with gastric carcinoma, and is health swiftly deteriorated until his death on June 3, 1963. Fold creases through "F" of F.
