page front and verso, 5x8. Written on Harvard University letterhead. Cambridge,
England. February 24, 1896. Addressed Mr. James L. Whitney of Cambridge. In
full: "I am very deeply obliged to you for this most interesting and
satisfactory photograph of Judge Hoar. It is very curious that I should have
been wishing this only a few days ago, my plan being to put in our framer
portraits of Mr. Longfellow, Dr. Gray, and Judge Hoar, at whose funerals I have
had the privilege of officiating. I very much appreciate your kindness. Always
truly yours". Francis G. Peabody (1847-1936) was an Unitarian
minister and professor of theology at Harvard University, where he served as
Dean of the Harvard Divinity School; his works include Jesus Christ and
the Christian Character, The Christian Life in the Modern
World, and The Religious Education of an American Citizen.
