Best remembered as a writer and illustrator, he also laid the foundation of
the Statue of Liberty.
Signature: "F. Hopkinson Smith/[one line illegible]/May 7,
1906", 4½x5 sheet with blank integral leaf. Embossed seal at top. Francis
Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915), grandson of Declaration of Independence signer
Francis Hopkinson, was an engineering contractor by profession. In that capacity
he did important work, building several lighthouses and laying the foundation
of the Statue of Liberty. However, Smith earned a second reputation as a
painter and illustrator, illustrating works of Oliver Wendell Holmes and
others. His reputation as an after dinner storyteller also grew, until he
was urged to commit some of his stories to print. Thus, Smith embarked on yet a
third career as a popular writer of short stories and travelogues.
