F. HOPKINSON SMITH
Engineer, artist and author
Autograph letter signed: "F Hopkinson Smith", 1p, 8¼x8. New York,
1893 March 4. On letterhead of Francis H. Smith, Constructing Engineers
& Contractors, to Edgar S. Weiner, Chairman, n. p. In full: "I
have your favor of 16th. Will you kindly give me a little more information as to
what is required - the Hall, etc. Yours truly". Francis Hopkinson Smith
(1838-1915), grandson of Declaration of Independence signer Francis
Hopkinson, was an engineering contractor by profession. In that capacity he did
important work, building several lighthouses and laying the foundation of the
Statue of Liberty. However, Smith earned a second reputation as a painter
and illustrator, illustrating works of Oliver Wendell Holmes and others.
His reputation as an after dinner storyteller also grew, until he was urged to
commit some of his stories to print. Thus, Smith embarked on yet a third
career as a popular writer of short stories and travelogues. Frayed at
edges, unevenly toned. Vertical and horizontal folds. One-fourth-inch circular
stain to right of signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
