Autograph letter signed: "Francis Wayland" in black ink. 1 page, 5x7¾ affixed to 5½x8½ paper. Written on personal Yale Law School stationary. April 14, 1900. New Haven, Connecticut. Addressed to a F.H. Gerrodette, Esq. of New York City, New York. In full: "Dear Sir, Just now, there is no vacancy in our teaching force - I shall put your letter on file for future reference, if occasion should arise. Please tell once more about your "thorough law school course". Yours sincerely". Francis Wayland III (1826-1904) was an American lawyer and author, who also served as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut. After attending Brown and Harvard, Wayland served as a probate judge in Connecticut in 1864 before being elected as state Lieutenant Governor from 1869 to 1870. In 1872, he turned to teaching, hired as a professor in the Yale Law School, the following year being elected as its dean, a post he would hold until 1903. The son of American Baptist educator and economist Francis Wayland (1796-1865), Wayland and his brother Herman authored The Life and Labors of Francis Wayland in 1867. Toned. Soiled.
