FRANCISCO M. PIERRA
The editor replies to the Cuban patriot and musician Ernesto
Bavastro, who fought for the independence of Cuba next to Jose Marti,
apologizing for the delay in the response and telling him that he cannot obey
his requirement of collecting funds for the revolution and admitting he hadn't
the same patience and resignation of his other compatriots, adding that he
collaborated to the cause in a different way.
Autograph Letter Signed: "F.M. Pierra" in iron gall ink.
10¾x8¾. Fully Translated in English: "Colon, July 3, 1885. Mr. Ernesto
Bavastro. Kingston. Dear Sir: I strongly beg you to please forgive my neglect.
You have written to me twice, and always for one thing or another, I ended up
not responding. However, I trust in your indulgence. I cannot accept the
commission to collect funds for the cause of Cuba, for the following two
reasons. The first one, my many activities; the second and more powerful one, I
do not have the patience and resignation to fight like our compatriots do. I
serve to the Revolution cause in another way. I regret I cannot accept to
collaborate in the sphere you considered appropriate to use me. If there is
anything else you think I could help, you can order it with all frankness. Put
me under your wife's feet and order to your friend. F.M. Pierra"
Francisco M. Pierra was the founder and director of the weekly political
newspaper "El Cubano" (The Cuban), edited in Brooklyn, New York in
1890. The purpose of it was to attack the activist for the independence
of Cuba Jose Julian Marti Perez. However, the weekly only lived two
months. Signer merits for further research. Multiple mailing folds. Very
delicate. Toned and worn. Lightly wrinkled. Edges lightly frayed. Otherwise,
fine condition.
