Photograph signed: "Franco Bonisolli", in gold ink, B/w,
3½x5½. Shown as Otello at the Vienna State Opera. Franco Bonisolli
(1938-2003) was an Italian operatic tenor famous for portrayals of
Manrico (Il trovatore) and Calaf (Turandot). Born in Rovereto,
Italy, Bonisolli won an international voice contest, earning his debut as
Ruggero in La rodine in 1962. He made a name for himself by reprising old
operas (such as La donna del lago), and by the early 1970's he was able
to launch his international career. In the next few years, he debuted at the
Vienna State Opera, The Salzburg Festival, The Paris Opera and the Metropolitan
Opera. His repertoire, almost exclusively Italian, expanded to include the
roles of Arnold, Don Jose and Otello among others. He also began his film career
during the same time, appearing in a TV movie version of Il trovatore in
1985. Fine condition.
