FRANÇOISE SAGAN
The French author and playwright signs her name on this First Day Cover honoring the Edith Wharton Literary Art Series
First Day Cover signed: "In all sympathy/Françoise Sagan", in blue felt tip, 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring Edith Wharton Literary Art Series, New Haven, Connecticut, September 5, 1980, 15 c stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Françoise Sagan (1935-2004) was a well-loved, yet rather controversial French novelist, playwright and screenwriter. She wrote her first and best known novel, Bonjour Tristesse (Hello Sadness) (1954) when she was just a teenager. Hailed as "a charming little monster", Sagan published dozens of works, many of which have been adapted to film. After two marriages that ended in divorce, the novelist began a serious, long-term lesbian relationship. In 1957 she was involved in a car accident that left her in a coma for some time. Sagan was known for her addictions to various drugs including cocaine, prescription pills, morphine, amphetamines and alcohol. In the 1990s she was charged and convicted for possession of cocaine. Upon her health-related death in 2004, The French President Jacques Chirac said during his memorial statement, "With her death, France loses one of its most brilliant and sensitive writers - an eminent figure of our literary life." Slight crease on bottom left corner. Shaded pencil note (unknown hand) on bottom margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
