FRANK B. KELLOGG
As Secretary of State, he acknowledges receipt of a note from a foreign dignitary.
Typed Letter signed: "Frank B. Kellogg" as Secretary of State, 1 page, 7¾x7¼. Department of State, Washington, 1925 June 4. On official letterhead with imprinted Department seal to "Excellency". In full: "I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excellency's note, dated May 27, 1925, the contents of which have been duly noted. Accept, Excellency, the renewed assurance of my highest consideration." Coolidge's Secretary of State from 1925-1929, Frank B. Kellogg (1856-1937) was awarded the 1929 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the Kellogg-Briand Peace Pact, an agreement signed in 1928 by 15 nations (later agreed to by 64 others) renouncing "war as an instrument of national policy". Kellogg had previously served as a Republican U.S. Senator from Minnesota (1917-1923) and U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain (1923-1925). From 1930 to 1935, Kellogg was an associate judge on the Permanent Court of International Justice, predecessor of the current International Court of Justice, commonly known as the World Court. The addressee is not identified here, but the form of address "Your Excellency" is customarily reserved for foreign heads of government. Lightly toned. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn. Faint pencil marking on right margin. Fold on bottom margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
