Coolidge's Secretary of State sends a letter to Ambassador Joseph C. Grew thanking him for a Christmas card and wishing him a happy and prosperous New Year.
Typed Letter signed: "Frank Kellogg", as Secretary of State, 1 page, 7x9. Washington, 1928 December 26. On letterhead of The Secretary of State addressed to The Honorable Joseph C. Grew, American Ambassador, Constantinople, Turkey. In full: "My dear Joe: Mrs. Kellogg joins me in thanking you and Mrs. Grew for your thoughtful Christmas message. It was a great pleasure to hear from you. We hope that you and Mrs. Grew had a pleasant Christmas and that you will have a happy and prosperous New Year. Very sincerely yours," Frank B. Kellogg (1856-1937), President Calvin Coolidge's Secretary of State from 1925-1929, was awarded the 1929 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating the Kellogg-Briand Peace Pact, an agreement signed in 1928 by 15 nations (later agreed to by 64 others) renouncing "war as an instrument of national policy". Kellogg had previously served as a Republican U.S. Senator from Minnesota (1917-1923) and U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain (1923-1925). Joseph C. Grew (1880-1965) was U.S. Minister to Denmark (1920) and Switzerland (1921), Coolidge's Undersecretary of State (1924-1927) and Ambassador to Turkey (1927-1932) before becoming Ambassador to Japan (1932-1941). Horizontal mailing fold through center. Lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
