British boxing champion signs "best wishes" on a playing card.
Playing card signed: "Best Wishes/Frank Bruno [drawn smiley face]" in blue ink, 3½x2¼. King of Clubs playing card. Franklin Roy "Frank" Bruno (born in 1961) won the WBC Heavyweight championship on September 2, 1995. His reign - and his boxing career - would not last much longer; Bruno was defeated in his first attempt to defend his title by Mike Tyson on March 16, 1996 (his last bout as a professional). Bruno, who had begun his career in 1980, quickly gained attention as he ran up a streak of 21 consecutive wins by KO. After beating former WBA champion Gerrie Coetzee, Bruno set his sights on the heavyweight title, losing to Tim Witherspoon (1986), Tyson (1989) and Lennox Lewis (1993) before finally winning the championship. In addition to his exploits in the ring, Bruno is known for his 1995 cover version of "Eye of the Tiger", which reached No. 28 on the U.K. charts, and for his appearances in pantomimes. Fine condition.
