FRANK CAPRA
Twenty-six page document contracting Capra to produce the film A Hole in the Head for
Samuel Goldwyn Productions
Document signed: "Frank Capra", 26 pages, 8½x13 Signed on page 15. Los Angeles,
California, 1958 September 10. Fifteen page contract with 11-page attachment, between
Frank Capra Productions; and Samuel Goldwyn Productions (a limited partnership) and
Sincap Productions (a joint venture) to produce the feature film A Hole in the Head (alternate
title: Garden of Eden). Except for filming on location, the movie is to be produced exclusively
at Goldwyn's studio, using safety film. Capra (1897-1991), born in Sicily, was the winner of
three Best Director Academy Awards for It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Deeds Goes
to Town (1936) and You Can't Take It With You (1938). He enjoyed total creative freedom
on his sets and also directed, among other films, Lost Horizon (1937), Meet John Doe (1941)
and It's A Wonderful Life (1946). Capra was the first Hollywood director to have his name
precede a film's title. Capra was President of the Academy of Motion Pictures (1936-1939).
A Hole in the Head, a family comedy starring Frank Sinatra, Edward G. Robinson and
Eleanor Parker, was one of Capra's last films. Although not Capra's finest effort, it reflected
the director's belief in the fundamental goodness of people and was a popular success. It
featured the Oscar-winning Sammy Cahn song "High Hopes," used in JFK's 1960
Presidential campaign. Corners lightly creased. 3 staples at top edge, stapled to blue cardstock.
Fine condition.
