FRANK DEFORDThe six-time winner of the Sports Writer of the Year Award writes a short note in 1971 Autograph Note signed: "September 8,1971 To Gail Benedict with thanks and best wishes Frank Deford", on a 5x4¼ sheet of paper captioned "There She Is". Frank Deford (1938-2017) was former Editor-in-Chief of The National, a sports weekly, and a columnist for Sports Illustrated as well as being a screenwriter. He was a correspondent on the HBO series Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel and a commentator for National Public Radio. Deford won the U.S. Sports writer of the Year award six times and is in the Sportswriters Hall of Fame. In 1998 he won an Emmy Award for his work as a writer during the Seoul Olympics and in 2003 won the Dick Schaap Award for Outstanding Journalism. Deford is an accomplished novelist who has written several books such as Everybody's All-American (1981) and An American Summer: A Novel (2002). Irregularly cut edges.
