FRANK FINLAY The highly regarded British stage and screen actor signed this typed letter to a fan who requested signed photographs Typed Letter Signed: “Frank Finlay” in black ink. One page. 6x8¼. Dated September 2, 1982. On his personal letterhead. To Mr. Peter McGrath. In Full: “Thank you for your recent letter. IAs requested I have signed the two sheets of paper and enclose two signed photographs of myself”. A devoutly Catholic Englishman, Frank Finlay (1926-2016) became a member of the British Catholic Stage Guild when he began his acting career in 1957. Originally, Finlay wanted to work in the family trade as a butcher, but it was at the theater that he met his wife Doreen Shepard, who he stayed married to for over 50 years until her death in 2005. Finlay was involved in countless plays during the 1950s and 1960s, and then made the crossover to film in 1962, but continued to work in the theater simultaneously. The actor received a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for his role as Iago in the film adaptation of Othello (1965). He appeared in several films in subsequent years, most notably playing the father in the Oscar winning WWII film The Pianist (2002) alongside Adrien Brody, who won Best Actor for the film. He also won a BAFTA award for his role in the television program ITV Sunday Night Theatre: The Adventures of Don Quixote (1973). Mailing creases. Faded typed (still legible).
