FRANK FOWLER
Sepia-toned photo (3½x5¼) of British light heavyweight in trunks, with taped fists and
posing in his fighting stance. Although he defeated two British light heavyweight champs,
but never got his hands on the belt
Photograph Signed: "Yours Sincerely/ Frank/ Fowler/ York". B/w, 3½x5¼ overall, 3x5 image,
one surface. Blank message side. British light heavyweight Frank Fowler could've been
champ... twice! The first time, he defeated British light heavyweight champion Tom Berry
at Liverpool Stadium in Liverpool, England on July 13, 1925. However, the fight was a
non-title fight, so Berry retained the belt and Fowler remained uncrowned. Later, on Sept.
9, 1927, he defeated Billy "Gipsy" Daniels, the man who took the title from Berry, at The
Ring in Blackfriars, London, England. Fowler won this fight on points, as he did with
Berry; he reportedly knocked Daniels down five times during the fight. But Daniels had
already relinquished his belt, so the fight was, at least from the standpoint of a title, an
empty victory. Fowler did get a legitimate shot at the title on June 30, 1929 against Harry
Crossley, but lost on points. He retired two years later, at age 25. Lightly toned, soiled and
bowed. Pen skipped in places while writing signature, which has low contrast but is legible.
Adhesive residue at bottom edge (does not touch signature). Rounded corners. Light dent
along top edge. Errors in negative have been reproduced in photo.
