FRANK H. HITCHCOCK
As Postmaster General, he declines an invitation to attend a dinner of Brooklyn's Harvard club.
Typed Letter signed: "Frank H. Hitchcock" as Postmaster General, 1 page, 5¾x7¾. Washington, D.C., 1912 February 5. On official letterhead to William H. Gary, Brooklyn, New York. In full: "Your letter of the 31st ultimo has been received and I greatly appreciate the compliment of being asked by the Harvard men of Brooklyn and Long Island to attend the dinner they are to give at the Hamilton Club of Brooklyn on Saturday evening, March 9th. I should like very much to accept the invitation, but unfortunately another engagement for that night makes it impossible for me to do so. With much regret, Sincerey yours". Frank Harris Hitchcock (1867-1935) headed the Republican National Committee before becoming President Taft's Postmaster General (1909-1913). As US Postmaster he introduced parcel post to compete with private express companies, established the first air mail service, and cracked down on mail fraud. Toned and lightly creased. Mailing fold through center. Otherwise, fine condition.
