FRANK LAUSCHE
Photo inscribed and signed as US Senator, about to leave office after losing
his bid for another term
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mr. Robert M. Ancell/with best
wishes/Frank J. Lausche/USS of Ohio/12-16-68". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 5x7
(one surface). Frank John Lausche (1895-1990) was Mayor of Cleveland
(1941-1944), Governor of Ohio (1945-1947, 1949-1957) and US Senator
(1957-1969). Lausche was a Democrat, but a maverick one who often crossed
party lines for votes and endorsements. He was a dark horse candidate for the
Democratic Presidential nomination in 1956, but Republican Presidential
candidate Dwight Eisenhower reportedly considered him as a running mate in 1952.
Lausche was defeated by John Gilligan in the 1968 Democratic primary. Lausche
refused to endorse Gilligan, who lost the general election to Republican William
Saxbe. Lightly creased at corners. Puncture at left lapel in photograph (3½"
from bottom edge, 2½" from left edge). Studio stamp on verso (no show-through).
Otherwise, fine condition.
