FRANK KELLY FREAS
He sends this typed letter to a fan dated in 1991, replying to a teacher about his collection of arsists
Typed Letter signed: "Kelly Freas", 1 page, 8½x11. West Hills, California, 1991 December 9. On letterhead of Kelly Freas Studios to David Brink, Langley High School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In full: "Many thanks for your interest. I'm very pleased to hear about your including recent American artists in your curriculum. Herewith is your "Alfie' with my compliments. [Item not included.] Incidentally, you may be interested to know that I am a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. There would be a fascinating field trip for your classes! All best, and happy holidays. PS: Please not new address above." Frank Kelly Freas (1922-2005) was called "the dean of science fiction artists." After painting pin-ups on Army Air Force bombers during World War II, Freas began illustrating science fiction books and magazine covers in 1950. He won his first Hugo Award in 1955, and became the first person to win ten of the coveted awards in 1976. (In 2001, he received another "retro Hugo" for the year 1951. Freas illustrated the works of most of the great science fiction authors, including Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke and Pohl. Two collections of his SF art were published. Freas also found time to illustrate dozens of MAD magazine covers (hence the "Alfie" reference in this letter). He was commissioned by NASA to design the mission patch and posters for the Skylab I mission, work which now hangs I the Smithsonian. He also drew a series of 500 saints for the Franciscan Order. Lightly creased at upper right. Fine condition.
