FRANK L. SHAW
Signed as Mayor of Los Angeles in lower margin of an autograph request. Shaw was the first mayor of a major US city to be recalled from office.
Signature: "Frank L. Shaw/Mayor", 1 page, 5½x8½. Signed in lower margin of an undated, typed letter requesting his autograph. Frank L. Shaw (1877-1958), previously active in Los Angeles business and fraternal organizations, won election to the City Council (1925) and Board of Supervisors (1929). He was elected (1933) and re-elected Mayor of Los Angeles, and pursued a vigorous construction program, including Los Angeles International Airport, to create jobs during the Depression. Accused of corruption and abuse of power, he became the first mayor of a major US City to be voted out of office in a recall election (1938). Over the next several years, Shaw was involved in a series of suits and countersuits. He sued Warner Bros. for libel, alleging that the film The Man Who Dared falsely accused him of ordering the police murder of a private investigator. The victim of the actual bombing then launched a civil suit against Shaw. These and several other sensational lawsuits were settled out of court with the terms kept secret. Shaw never faced criminal charges. Creased and lightly toned. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
