clipping. Frank Lawler (1842-1896) was a United States Representative
from Illinois. Born in Rochester, New York, Lawler moved to Chicago with his
parents at the age of 12, where he would hold several different careers; he
worked as a news agent on a railroad as well as a brakeman, he learned trade of
shipbuilders, and became active in the organization of trade and labor
unions, serving as president of the Ship Carpenters and Calkers'
Association. He worked as a letter carrier at the Chicago post office and
engaged in business as a liquor merchant before being elected to Chicago's city
council (1876-1885). In 1885 Lawler was elected as a Democrat to the U.S.
House of Representatives, and would serve for three terms; he was elected a
member of Chicago's board of aldermen in 1896 and would serve until his death
later that year. Irregularly cut. Pencil notes in unknown hand in top margin.
