Frank Ramsey wrote this letter, apologizing that he can't send an autographed photo, at the bottom of a fan's letter in 1978. With a newspaper clipping of Ramsey's induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame affixed.
Autograph letter signed "Frank Ramsey". 1 page, 8½x9½. Feb. 1, 1978. In full: "Dear Bill, I',m sorry that I have no photo to send. I have had no pictures taken since I retired & have none left from basketball. I appreciate you letter & request. It's nice to be remembered. Sincerely,". Ramsey wrote this letter on the bottom of a letter from Bill Wood, dated Jan. 27, 1978. This letter has an undated newspaper clipping of Ramsey's induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame affixed. This is obviously a later addition; Ramsey was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982, and the clipping obscures Wood's, but not Ramsey's, letter. Ramsey, born Frank Vernon Ramsey, Jr. in Corydon, University of Kentucky, helped Kentucky to an NCAA Championship in 1951 before turning pro. He was untouched by Kentucky's point-shaving scandal in 1952. Ramsey spent all of his nine seasons (1954-1955 to 1963-1964, with one year off for military service) with the Boston Celtics. During his tenure there, he was a guard on a dominating roster that won seven championships and one first place finish in the Eastern Division. Ramsey had a career 2,949 field goals and 8,378 points out of 7,382 attempts and 2,480 successful free throws out of 3,083 attempts, 3,410 boards and 1,134 assists. After retiring, he was coach of the ABA Kentucky Colonels for the 1970-1971 season. Ramsey was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Adhesive residue and paper loss on verso, which shows through to front and touches signature. Lower left corner in lower left corner. Top edge is irregular. Folded three times and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
