wishes "for health and strength".
Autograph note signed: "To my friend/Charles Keith/Best Wishes
Always/Yours for Health & Strength/Frank R. Shanahan", 5x3. Addressed on
verso (unknown hand) to Charles Keith in Topeka Kansas, postmarked
Montgomery, Alabama, August 17, 1945. Ink caption (unknown hand) in lower
right. Frank Richard Stranahan (1922-2013), the son of the wealthy
founder of Champion Spark Plug, was able to devote himself to sport, becoming a
top-flight amateur golfer. Beginning in 1936, he won over 70 amateur events,
and several Opens (vying there against pros as well as other amateurs).
Although he never finished higher than second in the US Amateur, he won the
British and Canadian titles twice each. Finally turning pro in 1954, he won 9
PGA Tour events. Stranahan was also a top-flight weight-lifter, earning the
moniker "the Toledo Strongman". After his golf days, he became a marathon
runner. Lightly toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) in lower margin. Fine
condition.
