7¾x9¾. FRANK WAKELEY GUNSAULUS (1856-1921), a Methodist minister in
Chicago, became a famed lecturer on diverse topics, very much in demand
on the Chatauqua circuit. In 1890 he delivered "the million dollar sermon",
inspiring meatpacking mogul Phillip Armour to endow what would become the
Illinois Institute of Technology. Gunsaulus became first president of the
school, then known as the Armour Institute, in 1893. Gunsaulus wrote 15 books
and many articles on poetry, music and history as well as religion. ROBERT
FRANCIS HARPER (1864-1914) was a groundbreaking scholar of Semitic
languages. He translated many cuneiform texts from Assyria and
Babylonia, and published a complete translation of Hammurabi's legal code.
He also promoted the study of Hebrew with a correspondence school and summer
school, with an audience which included Christian scholars and ministers
interested in closer study of the roots of their faith. RICHARD GREEN
MOULTON (1849-1924) was a literary scholar and anthologist who wrote and
lectured about Shakespeare, classical drama, and Biblical literature.
HAMILTON WRIGHT MABIE (1846-1919) was a prolific essayist and
anthologist, and the author of a literature textbook which went through many
editions. Mabie, like Moulton, authored some children's versions of classic
stories. Adhesive residue on left edge. Otherwise fine
condition.
