was his father (who was part Cheyenne) who influenced his interest in the Native
American experience, taking his son on trips to the Navajo Reservation in New
Mexico. Working multiple jobs, Waters eventually earned a distinguished
writing career with novels such as Fever Pitch (1930), Dust
Within the Rock (1940), River Lady (1942) and Flight
from Fiesta (1986), as well as other works including The
Colorado (1946), To Possess the Land: A Biography of Arthur
Rochford Manby (1973), and Mountain Dialogues (1981).
Waters is also remembered for establishing the Frank Waters Foundation in 1993,
a nonprofit whose goal is to promote the arts and the creative spirit. Normal
