Franklin Edgerton (1885-1963), conversant in many classical and modern
languages, was a founding member of the Linguistic Society of America
(1924) and a Sterling Professor of philology at Yale. His many
publications included a 1944 translation of the Bhagavid Gita, the
central religious text of Hinduism, with his accompanying volume of commentary.
His last published essay was "Did the Buddha Have a System of Metaphysic?" in
1959. (Edgerton concluded that the human Buddha, like Gandhi, was "untouched by
supernaturalism." Irregularly cut at edges. Adhesive on verso (light show
through). Otherwise, fine condition.
