As Secretary of the Interior, he promises to pass on a comment to the President.
Typed Letter signed: "Franklin K. Lane" as Secretary of the Interior, 1 page, 7x9. Washington, D.C., 1919 July 15. On official letterhead to Mrs. Archibald Hopkins, Nahant, Massachusetts. In full: "I have your note and shall tell the President that you have written me asking me to thank him for you. Cordially yours". Franklin Knight Lane (1864-1921), had been the Democratic candidate for several California offices, including Governor and Mayor of San Francisco. He was appointed to the Interstate Commerce Commission by President Roosevelt in 1905, and re-appointed by President Taft in 1909. He distinguished himself as an active member of the Committee of Fifty, formed to help rebuild San Francisco after the earthquake and fire of 1906. He was Secretary of the Interior under President Wilson (1913-1920), responsible for creating the National Park Service. He was an early advocate of US entry into World War I, critical of Wilson's reluctance. Mailing fold through center. Lightly toned and worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
