FRANKLIN PANGBORN
Handwritten note taken from a guest book for singer Hildegard
ANS: "Franklin Pangborn", 9½x4½. No date, no place. To entertainer Hildegard. In full: "To you my dear Aquarius/Hildegard with great admiration/and love from your Aquarian friend." Dated by Pangborn: "1957". On verso, inscribed signature: "'Vi' Wagner' you inspire me always!!/Jerry Wagner" and an unidentified signature at upper margin. Although Franklin Pangborn (1889-1958) spent most of his stage career in dramatic roles, after he proved he was a sure-fire laugh getter in his role as a snooty scorekeeper for a society scavenger hunt in My Man Godfrey (1936), Hollywood cast him largely in comedic roles, typically as a desk clerk, hotel manager, dressmaker, social secretary or busybody, in over 100 films. Pangborn was a favorite of W.C. Fields, who cast him in The Bank Dick (as bank examiner J. Pinkerton Snoopington to Fields' Egbert Sousé) and Never Give a Sucker an Even Break (1941). His other film credits include Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, A Star is Born, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and Now, Voyager, and Pangborn later became a frequent guest on TV shows, including the Jack Parr's first Tonight Show, on which he appeared as a guest and guest announcer. Lightly soiled. Shaded at perimeter. Overall, fine condition.
