Sale Price $427.50
B/w picture postcard of Lehár sitting at a Hofmann piano in a suit-and-tie, signed "To play on the Hofmann Grand Piano is always a real pleasure for me."This postcard was printed by piano manufacturers Hofmann & Czerny A. G., which means this is probably an advertisement.
Picture postcard signed "Lehár, Franz". 3¾x5½ overall, 3½x3½ image, one surface. Postcard by Hofmann & Czerny A. G., Vienna, Austria. Photo by Willinger. Lehár is shown sitting at a Hofmann piano. With two-line note in German, translated: "To play on the Hofmann Grand Piano is always a real pleasure for me." Since Hofmann & Czerny made pianos (and still does as of this biography), this is probably an advertising postcard for the company. Hungarian violinist and composer Lehár (1870-1948, born in Komárom, Hungaria, now Komárno, Slovakia) was a major figure in the revival of Viennese light opera at the beginning of the 20th century. His work The Merry Widow (1905), popularized operetta in the U.S.and also became Hitler's favorite stage work. He composed several marches as a military bandmaster before and during World War I. During the 1920s, Lehár incorporated new styles of popular music, including American blues, into his compositions, and began composing film scores. The composer, despite having a Jewish wife, remained in Vienna during WWII, avoiding politics. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Image is lightly silvered and was printed crooked on card. Small tear in lower right corner of card. Otherwise in fine condition.
