FRANZ SCHALK and BLANCHE BATES
The Viennese conductor pens a musical quotation, while the actress offers a sentiment on verso.
Autograph Musical Quotation signed: "F. Schalk/New York [18]99", on a 6¾x4 album leaf, affixed to a 8¾x5½ page (2 surfaces); and on verso Autograph Sentiment signed: "Sincerely/Blanche Bates". Typed caption affixed below each signature. Austrian conductor FRANZ SCHALK (1863-1931) Music Director of the Vienna State Opera (1918-1929), sharing that post with Richard Strauss in the early years. (Schalk and Strauss clashed over their respective roles, and the latter departed in 1924.) In Vienna, Schalk debuted new symphonies by Anton Bruckner and Gustav Mahler. His early recordings of Beethoven and Schubert are highly regarded. Schalk was a co-founder of the Salzburg Festival. American actress BLANCHE BATES (1873-1941) appeared in 18 Broadway plays between 1899 and 1934, mostly dramas leavened with an occasional comedy. She played the title role in Girl of the Golden West in three productions. Although the caption associates her with the productions of Arthur Frohman, she was also favored by impresarios Augustin Daly and David Belasco. Bates appeared in one feature film, an adaptation of Zane Grey's The Border Legion (as the heroine needing rescue). Lightly frayed at right edge. Lightly toned. Slightly creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through; not affecting signature). Two filing holes at left edge of page. Otherwise, fine condition.
