Two decades after enactment of the law which bears his name, the
former Congressman complies with an autograph request.
Typed Letter signed: "Fred A. Hartley, Jr", 1 page, 7¼x10½.
Accompanied by unsigned transmittal envelope. Milford, New Jersey, 1967 July
10. On personal letterhead to Peter R. Shikes, Barrington, New Jersey, in
full: "In accordance with your request for my autograph, I am pleased to
enclose it. I am glad to have it join with the many other notable people. With
kind regards, I am Sincerely". Republican Fred A. Hartley, Jr.
(1902-1969) represented New Jersey in the U. S. House from 1929 to 1949,
holding his seat in a swing district through the Depression and World War II.
When first sworn in, he was the youngest member of the US Congress (27). He
co-sponsored with Senator Robert A. Taft the Labor-Management Relations Act of
1946, familiarly known as the Taft-Hartley Act, securing enough votes to
override President Truman's veto. The act prohibited secondary boycotts and
allowed states to pass "right to work" legislation. Normal mailing folds.
