The thespian who played the Scarecrow in early productions of The Wizard of Oz signed this slip of paper
Signature: "Fred A. Stone/ 'Red Mill [illegible]". 5¼x2½ slip of paper affixed with a circular 1½x1½ newspaper image of Stone with longtime partner David Montgomery. Fred Stone (1873-1959) was a travelling stage performer who transitioned to the screen late in his career. His acts with David Montgomery included Broadway productions The Wizard of Oz (1902) and The Red Mill (1906). The two performed together for over 20 years. Stone's Scarecrow character from The Wizard of Oz served as an inspiration for the 1939 film version portrayed by Ray Bolger. Screen credits include The Westerner (1940), Alice Adams (1935), and The Goat (1918). He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Mounting remnants on verso. Water stain on “F” in “Fred”. Edges slightly frayed. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
