Autograph letter signed: "F.A.", 3p, 5¾x7¼. Beverly Hills, California, no year, March 30. On his personal imprinted letterhead. To George Penny, Dublin, Ireland. In part: "Well - so we didn't win! I thought that might happen. Strange - strange! All those pretty tickets!! All is well here - my horse has run twice in big stakes races recently and was 2nd in one and third in the other...Hope you are well & we all send best to the family...Hope you have some pleasant assignments if you're on another movie...All best again...." Fine condition. With signed, 6x4 airmail envelope addressed to: "Mr. George Penny, 32 Kinvara Pk., Dublin 7 (Repub.) Ireland" in Astaire's hand. He has signed above return address on flap verso: "F. Astaire". Fred Astaire (1899-1987) began his career touring in the vaudeville circuit with his sister Adele as a dancing partner. After many stage hits, he was given a screen test resulting in the famous verdict: "Can't act. Slightly bald. Can dance a little." In the 1930s, he was paired with Ginger Rogers in ten films and continued to dominate musical films in the 1940s. Astaire was a recipient of a special Academy Award in 1949 for his contribution to films and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Towering Inferno in 1974. He died at 88 in 1987. Two items. Lightly creased and soiled. Ink has run slightly at address. Otherwise, fine condition.
