A letter confirming an agreement to have Motion Picture Relief Funds as his attorney-in-fact
Typed letter signed: "Fred Astaire". 1p, 8½x11. Los Angeles, California, 1949 April 4. To RKO Radio Pictures, Los Angeles. In part: "Referring to the agreement of employment between us, I hereby appoint and authorize Motion Picture Relief Funds, Inc. as my attorney-in-fact to collect an amount equal to one percent (1%) of all compensation now or hereafter due or payable to me by you...." Fred Astaire (1899-1987) began his career touring in the vaudeville circuit with his sister Adele as a dancing partner. After many stage hits, he was given a screen test resulting in the famous verdict: "Can't act. Slightly bald. Can dance a little." In the 1930s, he was paired with Ginger Rogers in ten films and continued to dominate musical films in the 1940s. Astaire was a recipient of a special Academy Award in 1949 for his contribution to films and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Towering Inferno in 1974. He died at 88 in 1987. Lightly soiled. Ink and pencil notes (unknown hand) at blank upper margin. Corners lightly creased. Left blank margin lightly chipped. Tack head sized stain at lower blank right margin. Fine condition.
