FRED CANFIL
He signs a typed 1934 letter from Truman Headquarters, explaining that Judge Truman is campaigning on the other side of Missouri.
Typed Letter signed: "Fred Canfil" as Assistant Manager, Truman Headquarters, 1 page, 7x10½. Independence, Missouri, 1934 September 26. On Truman's personal letterhead to Davis H. Morgan, Moline, Kansas, in full: "Your letter addressed to Judge Truman received in the office today. I am very sorry indeed to inform you that Judge Truman is in the eastern part of the State, in matters concerning his fall Campaign, and we are not sure when he will return to Kansas City, as his first trip is down in the South Eastern part of the state and it will occupy the first six days of his campaign. However upon his return your very good letter will be referred to him. Sincerely yours". Fred Canfil (b. 1884) served with future President Harry Truman in World War I, remaining his lifelong friend, poker buddy and aide. Employed by Judge Truman as a tax investigator, Canfil worked on Truman's successful 1934 campaign for the US Senate, and was then appointed (1935) Executive Manager of the Jackson County (Missouri) Courthouse. In 1940 he joined Truman's Senate staff in Washington, dealing with patronage and other constituent service issues. Assigned for a time to the Secret Service as a Truman bodyguard, the husky Canfil then became US Marshal for the Western District of Missouri (1944-1953). Reportedly, it was Fred Canfil who gave Truman the famous plaque which sat on his White House desk: "The Buck Stops Here."  Fold creases through signature. Encapsulated.  Fine condition.
