FRED FREDERICKS. ALS: "Fred Fredericks", 1p, 8½x11. No place, but probably Eastham, Massachusetts, 1976 November 3. To "Dear Ms. Mendoza". In full: "I'm sorry that I have no original art at this time to send along. I hope the enclosed sketch of 'Mandrake' will serve as well. Thank you very much for your interest! Cordially". Sketch not present. Harold "Fred" Fredericks, Jr. (1929-2015) took over drawing the comic strip, "Mandrake the Magician", in early 1965, shortly after the death of the strip's creator, Phil Davis, in 1964. Fredericks, who had worked for "The Press" of Atlantic City from 1947-1949, drew a strip, "Salty Ranks" after joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950. After his discharge in 1953, Fredericks, a veteran of the Korean War, began drawing historic strips and panels, including "New Jersey's Patriots" (1957-1959) and "Under the Stars and Bars" (1960). In 1960, he became a comic book artist, contributing to a number of Dell and Gold Key titles (as diverse as "Daniel Boone" and "The Blue Phantom") before taking over the "Mandrake" strip. Fredericks and his family moved to their home in Eastham, on Cape Cod, in 1972. Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold at signature. Fine condition.
