FRED PERRY
Grand Slam-winning British tennis player poses in his tennis whites holding three tennis rackets, signs name in black ink
Photograph signed: "Best Wishes/ Fred Perry" in black ink. B/w, 8x10. Former professional tennis player Fred Perry (1909-1995) is best known for his outstanding championship-winning record. Ranked number one in the world for four years in total, Perry's record includes three consecutive Wimbledon Championships (1934-1936), eight Grand Slams and two Pro Slams. Perry was the first player ever to win all four Grand Slam titles (although not in the same year), and completed this "Career Grand Slam" at the age of 26, remaining the only British player to ever achieve this. Although universally acclaimed through the tennis world, Perry had issues in his home-country of Great Britain, who ostracized him for turning professional after completing a "hat-trick of Wimbledon singles triumphs", leading Perry to become disillusioned with the class-conscious nature of the Lawn Tennis Club of Great Britain and he moved to the United States and even served in the US Air Force during WWII. However, eventually Perry was recognized for his unprecedented contribution to British tennis and there is even a statue of him at Wimbledon. Slightly toned. Small stains on verso. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
