French sculptor Frederic Bartholdi (1834-1904) is best known for his statue
of Liberty Enlightening the World, more popularly known as the Statue of
Liberty, which arrived in New York harbor on June 17, 1885 aboard the French
steamer Isère. The statue was designed by Bartholdi as a tribute to
America's freedom, liberty, and self-determination, created at a time when the
French were having their own issues of independence. Bartholdi, who had
personally chosen the location for the statue, unveiled his creation, a gift
from the people of France to America, on October 28, 1886. An accomplished
sculptor, he created many other works besides the Statue of Liberty that reside
in his home country of France, though none have become as symbolic.
"Bartholdi" written in unknown hand at upper left. Fine
