Addressed by Bancroft to: "[M]r Wm H. Fry, Harrisburg, Penn, Etats Unis". Also bears Harrisburg postmark of June 6, 1900". Magazine photograph, b/w, 3x4¼, affixed at lower margin of signature side. Imprinted signature at lower portion of image, imprinted caption at lower margin. Historian Frederic Bancroft (1860-1945) devoted his life to researching and chronicling slavery in the American South. His works include Slave Trading in the Old South (1931) and The Colonization of American Negroes, 1801-1865. Bancroft, whose bequest established the Bancroft Prize at Columbia University, also served as Librarian of the U.S. Department of State from 1888-1892. Lightly creased and soiled. Worn at edges. Photograph has ½-inch tears at lower corners, partially separating it from the postcard. Mounting remnants on address side (no show through). Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper right corner. Overall, fine condition.
