FREDERIC DANNAY
Frederic Dannay sends an autograph letter saying were biographical information can be obtained about him included is original mailing envelope.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Fred Dannay", 2½p, front and verso, 7½x10½. Larchmont, New York, 1968 April 9. On letterhead of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine to Mrs. Lianne Carlin, Revere, Massachusetts. In full: "Just a hasty note in reply to your letter...I'm sorry I missed the first two issues. When you reprint them, by all means send me copies. About biographical material: there is a lot of it scattered around - CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS (new edition/1967); Howard Haycraft's MURDER FOR PLEASURE; Life Magazine (Nov. 22, 1943); GOLDEN MULTITUDES by Frank Luther Mott; Anthony Boncher's 'Ellery Queen: A Double Profile' - etc., etc., some of these, of course, quite old (and out-of-date). The most recent is a long, illustrated story about EQ in MD magazine, and since it contains some personal information about Mr. Lee and myself not available elsewhere, I suggest you write to MD - I'm sure they'll be happy to send you a copy of the December 1967 issue (MD Publications, Inc., 30 East 60th Street, New York, New York 10022). There is no biography (no complete or detailed one, I mean) - and I'd hesitate to even to try to put one together! Various people have 'threatened' to do one - but, so far as I know, nothing ever came of it. And one last point: I have written an 'autobiographical' novel under a different author's name; but it deals only with one summer in my life, at the age of 10, and very few people know that I wrote the book. I don't imagine you'd be interested in what happened to one-half of EQ when he was ten years old..." Lightly creased with folds, horizontal fold nicks the top of the "D" in Dannay. Fine condition. Accompanied by original autograph envelope, signed: "Frederic Dannay" in return address on back flap7½x4. Addressed by Dannay to: "Mrs. Lianne Carlin, P.O. Box 107, Revere, Massachusetts 02151". Lightly soiled, paper clip rust stain at postmark, else fine condition. Frederic Dannay (1905-1982), with his cousin, Manfred B. Lee (1905-1971), created the fictional detective/author Ellery Queen for a writing contest in 1929. Their winning entry, The Roman Hat Mystery, was published in June 1929. In 1941, the cousins, who would sell over 100 million books worldwide, began publishing "Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine", which today, along with "Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine", is the world's longest-running short story mystery magazine. Dannay also wrote the Drury Lane mystery series, which included The Tragedy of X and The Tragedy of Y in 1932 and The Tragedy of Z and Drury Lane's Last Case in 1933. Two items.
