Letter to a Professor Grant, acknowledging a donation to the Medical Society.
Autograph Letter signed: "Fred. J. Mouat M R. C. S. [Member, Royal College of Surgeons]", 7½x8¾. To "Prof. Grant", in full: "At the last meeting of the Medical Society, held in this college on Friday, it was moved, seconded and carried unanimously 'that a vote of thanks be presented to Prof. Grant for his kind donation to the Society'. The books were sent in by Mr. Carlin [?] at the [illegible phrase], and I then acknowledge receipt of them and returned the list. I have the honor to transmit to you the above vols. and to remain, Sir, Your obedient servant". British surgeon Frederic John Mouat (1816-1897) became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1838. Posted to the Indian Medical Service in 1840, he spent 30 years in India, helping to create a university system and working for penal reform. He also pioneered methods for the treatment of leprosy. After inspecting the Andaman Islands for a possible penal colony, he wrote a book about the Islands and islanders (1863). He was President of the Royal Statistical Society (1890-1892). Multiple folds. Surface creases. Toned. Left edge slightly frayed. Corners slightly worn. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Stained on folds on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
